Life Events

When you have a qualifying life event—like getting married, having a baby, or retiring—you may be eligible to make changes to your benefits outside of Grainger’s benefits open enrollment period. For most qualifying life events, you have 31 days from the date of the event to make changes.

Remember, if you increase or decrease your benefits coverage, or make any other changes, your payroll deductions will change accordingly. Review your costs for coverage.

Birth/Adoption

If you have had a baby or have become an adoptive or foster parent, congratulations! You are eligible to change your benefits within 31 days of your child’s birth date, date of adoption or foster placement. Changes you may want to make include adding your new child as a dependent to your health and dental benefits or adjusting your life insurance coverage.

Follow these steps to update your benefits:

  1. Log into Your Benefits Resources™ and select the Life Changes tab.
  2. Once you have updated your benefits, remember to review and update your W-4 tax information, if necessary.

You also may be eligible for Parent Leave (Maternity & Bonding) and/or Personal Leave. Watch the video and review Grainger’s Parental Leave Policy for all the details.

Marriage/Divorce

Since you have had a change in household, you are eligible to make changes to your benefits within 31 days of your date of marriage or divorce.

Follow these steps to update your benefits:

  1. Log into Your Benefits Resources™ and select the Life Changes tab.
  2. Once you have updated your benefits, remember to review and update your W-4 tax information and personal information (including name and marital status), if necessary.

Dependent Status Change

Dependent status changes may occur in situations including a dependent child turning age 26 or a spouse or domestic partner gaining or losing health coverage through an employment change. In situations like this, you are eligible to make changes to your benefits within 31 days of the change.

  1. Review the eligibility page to determine plan rules.
  2. Log into Your Benefits Resources™ and select the Life Changes tab.
